Biography

Ibou is a passionate African djembe musician originally from Dakar, Senegal. He has been calling Amsterdam home for the past 10 years, but his roots run deep in the vibrant, authentic neighborhood of Medina, where life unfolds vividly on the streets. He started his musical journey playing on those busy sidewalks, inspired by the sounds of talented drummers whose rhythms and energy helped him emerge into his own passion.

Coming from a tribe that traditionally didn’t play the djembe, starting a path in music was not so easy. Initially, he began with the Ashiko drums in an amateur band, exploring different sounds and rhythms. Over time, he found himself drawn to the djembe which to him is more than just an instrument: to him, the djembe is a powerful form of communication, blending spirituality with social connection — a universal language that speaks directly to the heart.

Although Ibou speaks many languages, he truly communicates with the people around him through music and rhythms. Through this organic entertainment he believes that we can better understand each other and feel our unity.

Playing music reminds him that we all have the capacity to learn and grow — everyone can educate themselves and find their voice.

As he often says, “Everyone should believe in their ability to educate themselves — our journey of self-education begins the moment we decide to try.”

Through his music, he hopes to inspire others to discover their own rhythm and share in the beauty of authentic connection.
